Local Information

The Torres Strait is unique in the world. Located north of the most northern tip of Australia, stretching right out to the continental shelf and withing 2km of Papua New Guinea.

Like a spray of pearls some 200 islands grace the clear shallow waters of the Torres Strait, fringed with reefs it is no wonder that Captain cook called this place, “The Labyrinth”. Being a major world shipping route, many a ship was wrecked on these reefs. So many in fact that a shelter was made for the survivors to shelter in until they would be discovered. There is a rich and very interesting history surrounding this place mixed with a strong, vibrant culture.

Although the Torres Strait is part of Queensland, you could be forgiven for thinking you were overseas. The main language is Creole with English being the second language.
